What Does Travel Insurance Cover?
Travel insurance provides essential protection against unforeseen issues during your trip, like flight cancellations, medical emergencies, baggage loss, and evacuations. Many plans also offer add-ons, such as "cancel for any reason" or adventure sports coverage, to match different travel preferences and needs. Here’s a quick look at what to expect:
Trip Cancellation Insurance: If illness, injury, or other unforeseen events prevent you from traveling, trip cancellation coverage can reimburse 100% of pre-paid, non-refundable costs for covered reasons. Covid-related cancellations may also be included in some plans.
Flight Insurance: Provides financial protection for trip cancellations, delays, lost baggage, or medical emergencies specifically related to air travel.
Travel Medical Insurance: Vital for international trips, travel medical insurance covers emergency care like hospital bills and ambulance services. Since Medicare generally doesn’t cover overseas medical care, this is essential for senior travelers. Medical should cover Adventure Sports and be no less than $100k coverage.
Emergency Medical Evacuation Coverage: If you’re traveling somewhere with limited medical facilities, this coverage ensures you’ll be transported to the nearest appropriate facility in case of emergency.
Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) Coverage: For extra flexibility, CFAR lets you cancel your trip for any reason not listed in your standard policy, covering up to 75% of non-refundable costs. Note, this add-on raises the plan cost by about 50% and is not always offered by the company you select.
Travel Delay Insurance: Covers expenses if you’re delayed, helping with essentials like meals, toiletries, and accommodation until travel resumes.
Trip Interruption Insurance: If you need to cut your trip short for a covered reason, trip interruption coverage reimburses missed, non-refundable trip costs and last-minute travel home.
Baggage and Personal Effects Coverage: Lost luggage? This coverage reimburses for lost items, though often at depreciated value. Baggage delay coverage can also cover essentials you need while waiting for your bags.
